“Why are you reading that smut?” Don’t worry, these books won’t elicit that kind of reaction from your mother. While we fancy a steamy romance novel as much as the next, you won’t find 50 Shades of Grey on this list. Instead, we present you a collection of the best books on composting we’ve come across. Reviews and opinions are our own.

Author Rebecca Louie
If you get nothing else from your Posty experience, purchase this book. Targeted towards individuals in urban environments, Louie leverages humor, strategy and enthusiasm to inspire future composters. Not to mention to the book is full of illustrations for those of you who need a reading break.
Author Michelle Balz
Picture rating 100%, honestly it brings me back to grade school - can picture books make a come back please?
While more focused on those with outdoor space, Balz paints a beautiful portrait of what you can accomplish with a compost. This book includes tutorials and powerful visuals and leaves you with with that "I got this" feeling.
Author Jeremy Bennett
Hot, cold, worm? This one a brief overview of each one, all from an urban lens. A great read for folks just getting started and are curious about what options exist. As an added bonus, Bennett dives into indoor and balcony gardening. If you're curious about composting feces (human and animal), it's cool if that's your thing, this is the book for you.
Author David the Good
Maybe in another life David the Good is a friend of ours or a member of the Posty family (hi, David!). Well, we can dream. David takes a messy, dirty and, TBH, intimidating topic and spells it out for the reader in a clear and, almost always, humorous manner. The book literally has the word “extreme” in the subtitle, so buckle up for ideas and methods you haven’t seen from other authors.
In short, this book is quick, informative and essential.
Author Jerry Minnich
Described as, “the essential guide to composting for all gardeners and environmentally conscious people,” this book runs the gamut of composting. Topics like the history of composting and different methods of composting are covered in a thorough, informative way. Yes, we gave it a picture score of 2/10, but, if you’re looking for a comprehensive, almost textbook-like read, The Rodale Book of Composting will be that for you.
Author Henry Owen
If you know worms are your compost match, then this may just be the book for you. Despite a relatively low picture score, this is a fast read.
This book addresses tips and tricks from every stage of the process, not to mention a deep dive into worm reproduction framework - if that's what you're into, no judgement.
